What we build

Database Development: what we build

Schema design, query tuning and safe data migration. Here are the six kinds of database development services work we are asked for most often.

Choosing the database

Which database fits which job?

Most applications need one primary relational database and, sometimes, a cache or search engine beside it. This is how we choose.

Database Best for Watch out for
PostgreSQL Most business applications; rich features and reliability Needs tuning for very heavy write loads
MySQL / MariaDB Web applications and CMS platforms Fewer advanced features than PostgreSQL
SQL Server Microsoft-centric enterprises and .NET applications Windows-oriented tooling and editions
MongoDB Flexible document data with changing structure Weaker for complex relationships and reporting
Redis Caching, sessions, queues and real-time counters Not a primary store for critical data
Elasticsearch / OpenSearch Full-text search and log analytics Not a system of record

Straight answers

Is Database Development right for you?

We would rather recommend less than sell you more. Here is how we judge it.

A good fit when

  • Pages or reports are slow because of the database
  • You are moving data to a new platform or cloud
  • The data model makes new features hard
  • Backups and access control need review
  • The application code is the bottleneck

Database tuning will not fix slow code; we profile first.

  • You need analytics across many systems

That is a data warehouse project, not a single database.

  • Data is small and simple

A managed database with defaults may be enough.

FAQ

Database Development FAQ

Should we use SQL or NoSQL?

Use a relational SQL database such as PostgreSQL for most business applications, because it handles relationships, data integrity and reporting well. Use NoSQL stores such as MongoDB or Redis alongside it when data is highly flexible, needs caching or demands very high write throughput.

How do you fix a slow database?

We find the slowest and most frequent queries, examine their execution plans, add or adjust indexes, rewrite inefficient queries and reduce unnecessary calls from the application, then measure the improvement.

How do you migrate data without losing any?

We script and rehearse the migration, validate with row counts and checksums, run it on a copy first, and keep a rollback plan, so the live switch is short and predictable.

Can you move our database to the cloud?

Yes. We migrate to managed services such as Amazon RDS, Azure SQL or Cloud SQL using replication to keep data in sync, then switch over in a short, planned window.

How do you secure a database?

We restrict access by role, encrypt data in transit and at rest, keep the database off the public internet, audit access and test backups by restoring them regularly.

Do you design databases for new applications?

Yes. We model the data with your domain experts, plan indexes for expected queries and design for change, so new features do not require painful restructuring later.
