Mobile Backend Development APIs, sync and notifications built for phones

O Clock Software, headquartered in Chennai, India, builds the backends that mobile apps depend on: APIs, sign-in, push notifications, offline sync, file uploads and real-time updates. Mobile backends have their own challenges, such as unreliable networks and users who never update their app, and we design for them.

What we build

Mobile Backend Development: what we build

APIs, authentication, push notifications and offline sync for apps. Here are the six kinds of mobile backend development work we are asked for most often.

Why mobile is different

Six things every mobile backend must handle

A backend built only for a website often struggles with mobile apps. These are the mobile-specific problems we design for.

Challenge Why it is different on mobile How we handle it
Unreliable networks Requests fail or arrive twice Retries, idempotent APIs and offline queues
Old app versions Users do not update for months Versioned APIs and forced-update rules
Offline edits Changes made without signal Sync with conflict resolution
Push notifications Separate Apple and Google services One notification service with targeting
Battery and data use Heavy calls drain phones Compact responses and batched requests
Large media uploads Photos and videos over mobile networks Resumable uploads and compression

Straight answers

Is Mobile Backend Development right for you?

We would rather recommend less than sell you more. Here is how we judge it.

A good fit when

  • You are building a new app and need its backend
  • Your app struggles with sync or notifications
  • Several app versions must keep working
  • You need real-time features
  • A backend-as-a-service covers everything

For simple apps, Firebase alone may be enough with light configuration.

  • The backend also serves big web workloads

See Backend Development for a wider server architecture.

  • Only the app interface needs work

    See Mobile UI/UX Development.

FAQ

Mobile Backend Development FAQ

Should we use Firebase or build a custom backend?

Use Firebase or another backend-as-a-service when the app's needs are standard and speed matters. Build a custom backend when you need complex business logic, specific data residency, or integration with many other systems; many apps combine both.

How do you keep old app versions working?

We version the APIs, keep older versions running for an agreed period, and add forced-update rules for versions that can no longer be supported safely.

How does offline sync work?

The app stores changes on the device and sends them when the connection returns; the backend resolves conflicts using agreed rules so no data is lost or duplicated.

How do push notifications work?

The backend sends notifications through Apple Push Notification service for iOS and Firebase Cloud Messaging for Android, targeted by user, segment or event, with delivery tracked.

Can one backend serve both our app and website?

Yes. A well-designed backend serves web and mobile through the same APIs, with mobile-specific endpoints where screens need lighter responses.

How do you secure a mobile backend?

We use token-based authentication, validate every request on the server, encrypt traffic, throttle abusive clients and never trust data coming from the app without checks.
